Sourdough French Toast
This sourdough French toast is golden, full of vanilla-cinnamon goodness, and perfectly crisp on the edges with a soft center. Thick slices of sourdough bread soak in a simple egg, milk, and cinnamon mixture, then cook in butter until beautifully browned. It’s the ultimate cozy breakfast — finished with a drizzle of maple syrup and a pat of butter.
Prep Time 10 minutes mins
Cook Time 10 minutes mins
- 2 loaves sourdough French bread (see note 1)
- 6 eggs
- 1 ½ cups whole milk
- 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoon cinnamon
- butter for frying
- maple syrup (for serving)
Slice the bread: Cut your sourdough French bread into thick 1-inch slices and set aside.
Make the batter: In a shallow bowl or baking dish, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon until smooth.
Soak the bread: Place the slices into the egg mixture, turning to coat both sides. Let them soak for about 1–2 minutes per side so the bread absorbs the batter.
Heat the skillet: Warm a cast iron skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add a little butter to coat the surface.
Cook the French toast: Place the soaked slices onto the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crisp on the edges.
Serve: Serve warm with butter and maple syrup, or your favorite toppings like berries, powdered sugar, or whipped cream.
