Foamy lavender matcha garnished with dried lavender

Lavender has been having a moment in our house, you guys. Partially because I found a bag of culinary-grade lavender in the pantry and partially because lavender makes everything prettier, calmer, and infinitely better.

It all started with the Lavender Simple Syrup I made a few days ago. It never occurred to me that we needed lavender simple syrup, but now I’m looking for any excuse to use it! It’s sweet, floral, and makes everything feel like a special occasion.

Today I realized I could put it in a matcha latte, and y’all, it’s something else. Something magnificent.

One of my favorite Instagram follows just took a trip to Japan (something I’ve never even considered doing), and her pictures of the Japanese countryside had me rethinking all of my travel plans.

(I don’t actually have any travel plans, but if I did, they might be switched to Japan.)

So, if you, like me, long to be exotic but have feet firmly planted in your home, this lavender matcha is the answer. It’s simple, beautiful, and will make you feel like you’ve hopped a plane across the world for just a few bucks.

What Is Lavender Matcha?

Lavender matcha is a soothing, floral twist on traditional Japanese matcha green tea. It blends the earthy, slightly grassy flavor of matcha with the light, calming notes of lavender and creamy milk. The result is a latte that’s as beautiful as it is delicious — balancing natural energy from green tea with a relaxing, floral finish you’ll love. Whether you prefer your matchas iced or warm, this floral latte feels like a little moment of calm in your day.

Benefits of Lavender Matcha

Lavender matcha isn’t just beautiful and delicious— it also has some wonderful health benefits we all need:

  • Natural Energy Boost – Matcha offers a steady release of caffeine without the jitters associated with coffee. It’s also low in acid and is gentler on the stomach than coffee.
  • Stress Relief – Lavender is renowned for its calming and relaxing properties. The simple act of whisking matcha powder and pouring lavender simple syrup calms the frayed nervous system associated with a demanding lifestyle.
  • Rich in Antioxidants – Matcha is packed with catechins, which support overall wellness. This is especially beneficial for those of us tending to little ones, as we live in a petri dish of germs.
  • Simple Pleasure– Preparing and sipping lavender matcha can be a simple way to bring moments of peace to your day (yay for busy moms!)

Ingredients You’ll Need

You only need a few simple ingredients to make this latte at home:

  • Matcha Powder – Choose high-quality ceremonial matcha like Jade Leaf for the best flavor.
  • Cool Water – Helps whisk the matcha into a smooth base.
  • Lavender Syrup – Adds a sweet floral note that feels extra special. Be sure to check out our simple recipe for Lavender Simple Syrup!
  • Milk of Choice – I like to use whole milk or half and half, but plant-based, like oat, almond, or coconut milk, works great too.
  • Ice – For a refreshing iced version.

Tips & Variations

  • Make It Iced or Hot – For a cozy version, skip the ice and steam your milk before pouring it over the matcha.
  • Vegan-Friendly – Use plant-based milk like oat or almond for a creamy, dairy-free option.
  • Adjust the Sweetness – Add more or less lavender syrup depending on how sweet and floral you like it.
  • Extra Frothy – Use a handheld frother for a café-style finish.
  • Prep Ahead – Make lavender syrup in batches so you can whip up this drink anytime.

How to Make Lavender Matcha

Making lavender matcha at home is so quick and simple, you’ll never need to go to the coffee shop again. Here’s how to do it step by step:

Iced Lavender Matcha

Step 1: Whisk the Matcha – Sift the matcha powder through a fine-mesh strainer. Then, whisk it with cool water until smooth and lightly frothy.

Step 2: Add Lavender Syrup – Stir in your lavender syrup until fully combined. I recommend starting with two teaspoons and adding more to suit your preferred sweetness.

Step 3: Prepare the Glass – Fill a glass with ice (skip this step if you prefer a hot matcha).

Step 4: Pour the Matcha Base – Pour the matcha-lavender mixture over the ice.

Step 5: Top with Milk – Slowly pour in your milk of choice. For a pretty layered look, pour gently over the back of a spoon.

          Hot Lavender Matcha

Step 1: Whisk the Matcha – Sift the matcha powder through a fine-mesh strainer. Then, whisk it with cool water until smooth and lightly frothy.

Step 2: Add Lavender Syrup – Stir in your lavender syrup until fully combined. I recommend starting with two teaspoons and adding more to suit your preferred sweetness.

Step 3: Warm milk. Warm milk in a small saucepan over medium heat and froth with a milk frother until light and foamy.

Step 4: Add milk. Pour the warm, frothed milk over the matcha and lavender syrup. Enjoy!

          FAQs

What does lavender matcha taste like?

Lavender matcha boasts a unique balance of flavors, with the earthy, grassy notes of matcha complemented by the light, floral sweetness of lavender syrup. The result is smooth, slightly sweet, and floral without being overpowering.

Can I drink lavender matcha while pregnant?

Lavender in small culinary amounts (like in syrup or tea) is generally considered safe, but always double-check with your healthcare provider before adding it to your daily routine.

Can I use dried lavender instead of lavender syrup?

Yes! You can steep dried culinary lavender in hot water to create a simple lavender tea, then mix it into your matcha, and then add sugar or honey to take the place of simple syrup.

Why does my matcha taste bitter?

Matcha can become bitter if the water is too hot or if too much powder is used. To avoid this, use cool water for whisking, and stick to the recommended amount of matcha. Lavender syrup also helps balance out any natural bitterness.

Can I make lavender matcha without caffeine?

Yes, you can use caffeine-free green tea powder alternatives or skip the matcha altogether and use steamed milk with lavender syrup for a soothing herbal drink.
