Strawberry matcha on a wooden farmhouse table

Strawberry matcha, you guys.

Strawberry. Matcha.

Maybe you already know what this is. Maybe you, like me, don’t know, but you’re intrigued because it’s so stinkin’ pretty.

I’m not ashamed to admit that’s what drew me to the strawberry matcha—the prettiness (I’m a girl. I like pretty things).

It all started with the Lavender Matcha I made last week. The lavender latte was smooth, floral, and relaxing (everything a mom of littles needs), but because I don’t poison my family with artificial colors, it wasn’t purple.

The strawberry version, however, is naturally pink due to the ripe, beautiful strawberries, resulting in a creamy pink and white latte that feels like everything is right in springtime. I made it on a whim, and it was everything I’d hoped it would be.

Interested? Of course you are!

What Is Strawberry Matcha?

A Strawberry matcha is a modern twist on the traditional Japanese green tea latte. It combines earthy, slightly grassy matcha powder with the sweetness of fresh (or powdered) strawberries for a latte that’s pretty, refreshing, and indulgent. The contrast between vibrant green matcha and bright pink strawberries makes it irresistible to aesthetic latte lovers of all ages (just ask my toddler).

Like all good things in life, the flavor is well-balanced: matcha brings depth and a gentle caffeine boost, while the strawberries add natural sweetness and fruitiness. When layered with creamy milk, you get a drink that feels both energizing and familiar, even if you aren’t usually a tea person.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Here’s everything you need to make strawberry matcha at home — using either fresh strawberries or strawberry powder:

  • Matcha powder – Use ceremonial-grade matcha, such as Jade Leaf, for a smoother, sweeter flavor, or culinary-grade matcha if that’s what you have. Always sift before whisking with a bamboo whisk to prevent clumps.
  • Strawberries or strawberry powder – Fresh (or frozen and thawed) strawberries give a jammy, fruit-forward base, while strawberry powder makes the recipe quicker and shelf-stable.
  • Honey or sweetener of choice – Honey complements the berries beautifully, but maple syrup, agave, or simple syrup all work.
  • Milk – Dairy or non-dairy. Oat milk makes the creamiest latte, while almond and coconut milk add lighter flavors.
  • Ice – Essential if you’re making the iced version!

Optional add-ins: A splash of vanilla extract creates a strawberries-and-cream flavor while a dusting of coconut flakes can brighten the strawberry flavor even more.

              Variations & Tips

              • Fresh vs. powder – Fresh strawberries give a juicy, jam-like flavor, while strawberry powder is quick, mess-free, and has a concentrated berry taste.
              • Dairy-free version – Use oat milk for the creamiest plant-based option. Almond milk and coconut milk add lighter, nutty, or tropical notes.
              • Adjust the sweetness – Add more or less honey to taste, or swap it for maple syrup, agave, or a splash of lavender syrup for a floral latte twist.
              • Hot strawberry matcha – Skip the ice and use steamed milk instead. Warm strawberry purée makes a cozy base for cooler months.
              • Layered look – For the prettiest presentation, add the strawberries first, then ice, whisked matcha, and finally milk for photo-worthy layers.
              • Boost the flavor – A few drops of vanilla extract, coconut cream, or even a sprinkle of shredded coconut can add extra depth.

What Does Strawberry Matcha Taste Like?

Strawberry matcha lattes have a flavor that’s both unique and well-balanced, but familiar enough for people who aren’t tea connoisseurs. The matcha brings an earthy, slightly grassy taste with gentle bitterness, while the strawberries add natural sweetness and fruity brightness. When blended with creamy milk, the result is a smooth and refreshing latte that feels indulgent yet not overly heavy.

Served iced, it’s light and refreshing— perfect for warm days or any time you need a pep in your step. Served hot, it’s cozy and comforting while still offering that signature matcha flavor you’ll crave.

              FAQs

Are strawberry matchas good for you?

Yes, praise God! Homemade strawberry matchas combine the antioxidant benefits of matcha with the vitamin C and natural sweetness of strawberries. Matcha provides a steady caffeine boost without the jitters of coffee, while strawberries add extra nutrients and flavor. If you use a natural sweetener like honey or maple syrup, it’s a nourishing option that feels like a treat.

Can you make strawberry matcha with jam?

Absolutely. If you don’t have fresh strawberries or strawberry powder, a spoonful of strawberry jam works as a quick substitute. Simply stir the jam with a little warm water to loosen it, then add it to your glass before pouring in the matcha and milk.

What kind of matcha should I use?

Ceremonial grade matcha like Jade Leaf will give you the smoothest flavor and brightest color, but culinary grade is fine for lattes if that’s what you have on hand.

              Does matcha have caffeine?

Yes. Since it’s made with matcha powder (ground green tea leaves), it contains caffeine — usually around 30–70 mg per serving depending on how much you use. It’s less than a cup of coffee but still enough to give a gentle energy boost.

Can I make strawberry matcha ahead of time?

You can whisk the matcha and prep the strawberry base in advance, but it’s best to assemble the latte just before serving so the ice doesn’t dilute the flavor.
